Luxley at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games
In 1848, the iconic OMEGA watch brand was started in a tiny workshop in Switzerland. Fast-forward 168 years and the brand is now celebrating its role as the “Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games” for the 27th time on Ipanema Beach in Rio. The OMEGA House concept was first launched four years ago in London and, following its huge success, has been reimagined for the big event in Brazil. As we get ready to send off the Olympic Games for another four years, we look back at the highlights from our time in the great Olympic City of Rio and the amazing repertoire of celebrations that took place at OMEGA HOUSE Rio.
After a four year countdown, Luxley embarked on a journey of a lifetime – to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Igniting our time in Olympic City with a private dinner at Christ the Redeemer – never has an experience been quite as incredible as the weeks to follow. Officially opening its doors on Saturday the 6th of August, OMEGA HOUSE Rio kicked off with an impressive line-up of exclusive events, Oscar-winning actor and OMEGA Ambassador Eddie Redmayne was the opening night’s guest of honour with his stunning wife Hannah Redmayne by his side. The following evening, OMEGA HOUSE was transformed into a glistening setting of grandeur proportions for Gold Night with Alessandra Ambrosia.
As the weekend came to a close, OMEGA HOUSE prepared to host the Golf Ball – celebrating the return of golf to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1904 – with special guest and OMEGA brand ambassador Sergio Garcia. The next event on the schedule, ‘Cocktails in Space’, celebrated OMEGA’s renowned heritage of space exploration. Attended by legendary astronaut and OMEGA ambassador Buzz Aldrin who was part of the Apollo 11 lunar landing in 1969, Aldrin famously set foot on the moon wearing an OMEGA speedmaster watch. Then came the OMEGA HOUSE of Fashion. While some of us were busy cheering for Mo and Jessica at the Olympic Stadium, OMEGA HOUSE was transformed into a scene worthy of a Vogue cover as guest of honor for the evening, Alexandre Herchcovitch kicked off the celebrations back in Ipanema. The Brazilian fashion designer has made headlines recently for creating the gold sequined column dress that Gisele Bündchen famously wore during the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony.
With every new day bringing an incredible new guest of honor to the House, we were beyond thrilled to welcome British golden girl and silver medal winner Jessica Ennis-Hill to OMEGA House. Jess joined us just hours after she finished competition and despite only a few hours sleep Jess was as bright and sparkling as ever – a true icon of British sport. As an OMEGA brand ambassador, Jessica was keen to visit the house and reflect on her incredible achievement. We salute you Jess!
The highly anticipated “Swimming Legends” event came next, attended by special guests and brand ambassadors Michael Phelps and Chad le Clos. Fresh from their efforts in the pool, both Phelps and Le Clos have added to their medal tally during Rio 2016. Incredibly, Michael Phelps added 5 more gold medals and one silver – pushing his overall career total to 28 medals including 23 gold. To be in his presence was truly awe inspiring. The duo was joined by 9-time Olympic medal winner Alexander Popov, another OMEGA brand ambassador. The evening brought together the brand’s family of successful swimming stars, with many other VIPs, athletes and medallists including swimmers, cyclists, soccer players and rowers in attendance.
All that is under 2 weeks! Stay tuned as we come to the final few days and weekend at OMEGA HOUSE Rio…
